Aviation Trading Cards Collection

Abstract

The collection consists of approximately 700 collectable trade cards and stamps issued by various industries, primarily the “cigarette cards” of tobacco manufacturers. The majority of the card or stamp series feature airplanes, but some series focus on famous aviators. Materials originate from the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany.

Ina Bicknell Collection

Abstract

Photographs relating to aviation in this collection depict topics such as pilots, airplanes, naval ships, and military personnel around the time of World War II. The collection also contains aerial photographs of city landscapes and of the 1937 flood in southwest Ohio and Kentucky. The majority of the photographs in the collection are not dated and most are unidentified.

Bill's World War II Aviation Scrapbook (MS-678)

The scrapbook contains approximately 62 original photographs depicting the Lincoln Airplane and Flying School in Lincoln, Nebraska; the Fairchild factory at Hagerstown, Maryland; as well as scenes at Niagara Falls and Dayton, Ohio. Also included are several clippings from The Philadelphia Inquirer's U.S. Warplane Series (Nos. 7-24).

Ann Cooper is a prolific author with over 600 published magazine articles and ten books on aviation notables to her credit. The research collection is an excellent source of information on women aviators such as Jessie Woods, Patty Wagstaff, Edna Gardner Whyte, Dorothy S. Lewis, and Nancy Hopkins Tier, as well as African American aviators including the Tuskegee Airmen.

Hans Dam Aviation Collection

Abstract Hans Dam was a 50-year collector of aviation memorabilia, especially photographs and newspaper and magazine clippings. His primary areas of interest included air races and air shows, early flight, WACO aircraft, and the history of aviation in southwestern Ohio and northern Kentucky. Abstract Ivan R. Gates was an Early Bird of Aviation, receiving his pilot’s license in 1911, and is credited with starting the first flying school on the west coast in California. The collection documents Gates’ aviation business enterprises, including the Gates Flying Circus, Gates Flying Service, and the New York-based Gates Aircraft Corporation, which manufactured the Gates Belgian RSV convertible monoplane/biplane. Frederick L. Haines Flight Logs (SC-338)

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of three pilot’s flight logs containing the flight information of Frederick L. Haines, a lifelong resident of Miamisburg. Haines started flying in a WACO in 1932 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Haines logged most of his hours from airports around the Miami Valley, including East Dayton Airport, Vandalia, and Springfield.
